Minister for Roads Michael Daley today said the NSW Government’s road safety campaign would be taken to Macquarie Centre next week.
Mr Daley said the RTA Slow-Down Roadshow was part of the government’s commitment to improving road safety and reducing the state’s road toll.
“Every death on our roads is a tragedy and we all need to take the road safety message seriously,” he said.
“Speeding is the number one killer on our roads, especially among younger drivers, which is why we’re working hard to change driver behaviour.
“The campaign’s message is very simple, the only way to get to your destination safely is to slow down and stick to the speed limit,” said Mr Daley.
Mr Daley said the RTA Slow-Down Roadshow visited local communities around the state to educate motorists about the consequences of speeding.
“The roadshow is targeting communities with a high number of speeding related deaths and crashes to make it clear that there’s no excuse for taking risks on our roads,” he said.
“In the Ryde area, six people were killed and 170 injured in speeding related crashes between 2003 and 2007.
“We recently saw another tragic crash locally when two young men lost their lives on Epping Road.
“The consequences of speeding are also devastating for those left behind, including families, friends, workmates and entire communities,” said Mr Daley.
Mr Daley said the Slow-Down Roadshow included an emotional road safety video featuring Michelle Amess, who lost two sons in a high speed car crash at Morpeth in 2005.
“The roadshow also features a graphic display of two cars that were crashed at different speeds, one at 60 kmh and another at 100 kmh, to visually highlight the impact of speeding,” he said.
NSW Centre for Road Safety Director, Dr Soames Job, said the roadshow was about changing attitudes to speeding.
“We encourage you to come along to the road show and spend time talking to us about speeding and road safety,” he said.
“This is about changing attitudes towards speeding and making our roads safer for you and your families,” said Dr Job.
The Slow-Down Road Show will be at the Macquarie Shopping Centre from Monday 11 May until Sunday 17 May.
