Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, Frank Sartor says that the Climate Group’s Greenhouse Indicator Annual Report 2009 released today, demonstrates that NSW is leading other states in carbon emission reduction.
The Climate Group tracks greenhouse emissions from energy use in Victoria, NSW and QLD on a weekly basis through its Greenhouse Indicator.
“NSW is again leading Australia with the biggest reduction in emissions down 3% this year or 3.2 million tonnes,” Mr Sartor said.
“New gas-fired power stations introduced by this Government, have reduced coal emissions more than 6%, assisting the State to reduce more carbon than Victoria and QLD.”
Governments around the world are increasingly working with households to reduce energy consumption and help stimulate low carbon economies.
Frank Sartor confirmed that last week, the NSW Government extended its $100 million rebates to $175 million.
“The $75 million extension to the rebate program is helping families reduce energy use, save money and lower emissions,” Mr Sartor said.
“Every NSW household can receive $1,500 worth of rebates each year, joining the 180,000 households who’ve taken up rebates since 2007.”
By 2011 it is expected that:
330,000 households will have benefited from $39 million in savings
500,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas will have been saved
