Sydney style meets New York's passion for fashion
21.01.2010
New York fashionistas will get a glamorous glimpse of Sydney style this week as part of G'day USA, the annual promotion of the best of all things Australian in the US.
Minister for Tourism Jodi McKay said several emerging Sydney-based fashion designers will join other Australians in showcasing their creations to US retailers and media in the Big Apple.
“New York is considered to be the foremost global fashion centre and one of the most important markets for international and local designers.
“Sydney’s fashion scene is one of the most dynamic, exciting and innovative in the world right now.
“New York fashion houses are increasingly looking to Australia for fashion-forward designs and inspirations,” Ms McKay said.
“And Australian and particularly Sydney-based designers have been steadily increasing their influence and presence on catwalks in London, Paris, Milan and New York.
“The G’day USA event gives Sydney designers a unique opportunity to showcase their collections to New York fashion retail buyers, fashion editors, stylists and agents.
Ms McKay said Australia’s fashion exports are predicted to be worth approximately $320 million to Australia’s economy this financial year.
“It’s so important to encourage our young and emerging talent, who are well-placed to tap into the US market.”
“Sydney based designers Luela, Amar, Natalie Chapman and Pizzuto are all taking part in this year’s event.
“They have the chance to follow the trail blazed by other designers from Sydney and NSW such as Sass & Bide, Lisa Ho, Zimmerman and more recently Samantha Wills, who have made big inroads into the US market.”
Ms McKay said G’day USA: Australia Week 2010 is a golden opportunity to show off Sydney and NSW as a great place to visit, do business, work and live.
“G’day USA provides an important forum to promote Sydney and NSW to North American decision makers, build relationships and networks and raise awareness of our business strengths,” Ms McKay said.
“We also use the event to show off some of the very best of our achievements and attractions in areas such as technology, innovation, fashion, tourism and food.”
G'day USA runs until 22 January and is supported by the NSW Government in collaboration with Qantas Airways, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Tourism Australia and Austrade.
