Nathan was elected as the Member for Toongabbie in March 2007 immediately taking on the Ministerial Portfolios of Emergency Services and Water Utilities, widening soon to include the Water Port Folio as well. He was also Minister for the Arts and Minister for the Central Coast.

Nathan Rees grew up in Western Sydney and completed his HSC at Northmead High School, followed by an apprenticeship in horticulture at Parramatta Council where he worked as a greenkeeper.

He worked nights as a garbage collector while studying English Literature at the University of Sydney, graduating with an Honours degree in 1994.

Nathan Rees worked for the NSW and Commonwealth governments in a variety of roles including as a ministerial advisor and as a Chief of Staff.

As Minister for Emergency Services, Nathan Rees lead the response and recovery effort to June 07 storms and floods in the Hunter and on the Central Coast. Nathan also lead the response and recovery efforts after floods on the North Coast and hail storms in Western Sydney.

Mr Rees introduced a new Bushfire Community reporting system which puts a figure on the property protected through all forms of bushfire prevention measures.

Mr Rees delivered  a record $872 million 08/09 Emergency Services budget including a 12 per cent increase in funding for the State emergency Service.

As Minister for Water, Nathan worked to secure Sydney’s long-term drinking water supply through a series of measures including massive recycling, desalination, storm water harvesting and water saving programs.

Nathan, to ensure the whole state had a secure water supply also initiated an inquiry into NSWs local Water Utilities aiming at drought-proofing our regional centres, country towns and rural villages.

Nathan also served as the Premier of NSW from September 2008 until December 2009.
