Steve Whan MP

Member for Monaro

Minister for Primary Industries, Minister for Emergency Services and Minister for Rural Affairs

Steve Whan was elected as Country Labor Member for Monaro in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007 with an increased majority. Since being elected Steve has worked to ensure Monaro gets its fair share, reversing 15 years of National Party excuses, blame games and inaction in the electorate.

Steve and Cherie live in Queanbeyan with their two children and are both active in local school, sporting and community groups. Steve has previously worked at the Australian Sports Commission, for former Federal Ministers, and in earlier days as a Labourer and a trolley pusher at Woolies. Steve has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Politics and a Graduate Certificate in Management.

Steve entered politics because he has a strong desire and commitment to delivering for his community. With two new hospitals built, more services, new and upgraded schools and improvements to major roads like the Monaro and Kings Highway Steve is delivering for his community, but still has much more he intends to see completed.

Steve is currently the Minister for Emergency Services, Minister for Small Business and Minister for Rural Affairs under Premier Nathan Rees. He has previously served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministers for Regional Development & Rural Affairs, Planning and Primary Industries and is also Convenor of the Parliamentary Country Labor group.

Steve became Outside work Steve enjoys swimming, running, cycling, growing native plants, playing water polo and attending his kid’s various activities.
He is a life member of ACT Water Polo Inc and was a founding board member of the South East Region Academy of Sport along with many other voluntary sporting roles.
