    Ten questions for Duncan Gay

Posted: Tuesday, 10 January 2012 | By: Robert Furolo

Duncan Gay has a mounting pile of questions to answer following revelations he sat on advice from Roads and Maritime Services recommending he reinstate a speed camera near Urunga that was removed last July.

Duncan Gay removed 38 speed cameras last year in pursuit of a big splashy headline and today we have learned that the Minister removed the 38 cameras first – then commissioned advice as to whether this was safe.

This looks like an appalling case of negligence. The O'Farrell Government has put its own political interests ahead of the safety of NSW motorists.

I call on the Minister to answer the following ten questions:

    1. Why did you remove 38 speed cameras last July – and then commission advice from Roads and Maritime Services as to whether this was safe?
    2. Precisely when did you receive advice from Roads and Maritime Services to reinstate the speed camera on the notoriously dangerous stretch of Pacific Highway near Urunga?
    3. Why did you sit on this advice and not act on your Department's recommendations?
    4. Will you now immediately release the full contents of this advice to the public?
    5. Has Roads and Maritime Services advised you to reinstate any of the other 37 speed cameras across NSW that were removed last July?
    6. Given that you will now reinstate the speed camera near Urunga, will you do the same at any of the other 37 locations across NSW?
    7. How many motor vehicle accidents have occurred at each of the 38 locations since speed cameras were removed last July?
    8. How many injuries and fatalities have occurred at each of the 38 locations?
    9. Why were all speed cameras switched off before alternative safety measures had been implemented such as flashing lights and point-to-point cameras?
    10. Why did you ignore the advice of the Auditor-General that "a longer term analysis should be undertaken before final decisions are made about the removal of speed cameras"?

So an ill conceived tory, populist plan is now putting lives at risk? Why am I not surprised. I would much rather have 'revenue raising' cameras in my area that save lives then nothing at all.
