Mick Veitch was born in Gundagai, situated on the Murrumbidgee River in southern New South Wales, on 19th December 1962. Mick has lived most of his life in rural south-western NSW. He was educated by the public school system at Adelong Primary and Tumut High Schools. Mick has worked as a shearer, farm labourer, railway station assistant, community sector worker (disabilities) and as a General Manager of a not-for-profit.

Mick is a member of the Australian Services Union. He joined the Australian Labor Party in March 1989 whilst working with the State Rail Authority as a Station Assistant at Town Hall Station. Mick has held various positions within the ALP, including being: a member, NSW Agenda Committee (1999 2008), Country Labor Policy Committee (1992 – 2003), Young Branch Secretary (1991 – 2008), SEC Secretary (1992 – 2008), FEC Secretary (1992 – 2001), Country Conference delegate (since 1992); NSW Annual Conference delegate (since 1992); National Conference delegate (since 2002); Federal Candidate for Hume in 1997.

Mick has also served as an independent Shire Councillor with Young Shire Council from September 1995 through to November 2007. On 24th March 2007, Mick was declared elected to the NSW Legislative Council becoming the 201st member of the ALP to be elected to the Upper House. Mick was appointed Deputy Government Whip and a Member of the Upper House Standing Committee for State Development, and the NSW Upper House Standing Committee for Social Issues. In June 2007 Mick was appointed to the Select Committee on Political Donations.

In 2011 Mick became the Shadow Minister for Trade and Investment, Shadow Minister for Regional Infrastructure and Services and the Shadow Minister for Regional and Rural Affairs. He is also the Duty MLC for the seats of Burrinjuck, Coogee, Goulburn, Lismore, and Northern Tablelands.
