Walt Secord was elected to the NSW Legislative Council in late-May 2011.
 
Born in Canada, Mr Secord graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from York University in Toronto and migrated to Australia in September 1988, becoming an Australian citizen in June 1992.
 
He has worked at the Toronto Star and the Australian Jewish News. In 1991, he won an Australian Human Rights Award for a series of articles he wrote at the Australian Jewish News.

Walt was raised and educated on an Indian reserve – Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation - in southern Ontario, Canada.  He is the product of an inter-racial marriage:  His mother is an Anglo-Canadian and his father is a Treaty Ojibway-Mohawk Indian. They still reside on the Indian reserve and run a craft shop there.
 
Since 1995, Walt has worked for a number of political figures including Bob Carr, Justine Elliot, Kristina Keneally, Eric Roozendaal and Kevin Rudd.
 
Walt is interested in Indigenous issues, community development, aged care, education, the prevention of genocide, inter-faith activity and the abolition of the death penalty.
 

In the Robertson Labor team, Walt is the duty MLC for Camden, Campbelltown, Parramatta, Tamworth, Tweed and Wollondilly.

He has an adult daughter.
